How to prevent dogs getting bored when left alone
Dogs are social animals that thrive on interaction and mental stimulation. When left alone for extended periods, they can become bored, anxious, and even destructive. Providing your dog with engaging activities can prevent boredom and keep them happy while you’re away. Here are some effective ways to keep your pup entertained and stress-free when they’re home alone.
Provide interactive toys
Interactive toys, such as treat-dispensing puzzles and chews toys, keep dogs mentally stimulated and occupied. These toys challenge your dog to solve problems, rewarding them with treats and keeping their mind engaged.
Use scent based activities
Dogs have an excellent sense of smell, and scent-based games can keep them engaged. Try hiding treats around the house for them to find while you’re gone.
Use background noise
Playing soft music, leaving the TV on, or using a pet-friendly podcast can create a comforting environment and reduce feelings of loneliness.
Rotate toys regularly
Just like humans, dogs can get bored with the same toys. Rotating their toys every week or so keeps things fresh and exciting.
Set up a cosy space just for them
Ensure your dog has a cozy space with their bed, blankets, and favorite toys. A familiar and comfortable environment helps them feel safe and secure.
Provide a view
If possible, position your dog’s bed near a window so they can easily see outside. Watching birds, people, or other animals can provide entertainment and mental stimulation.
Train your dog to enjoy alone time
Gradually train your dog to be comfortable alone by leaving for short periods and gradually increasing the time. Reward calm behaviour to reinforce positive associations with being alone.
Plenty of exercise before leaving
A well exercised dog is a happy dog. Take your dog for a long walk or play a game of fetch before leaving to burn off excess energy and encourage relaxation.
Arrange a visitor or dog-walker
If your dog struggles with long periods of alone time, consider hiring a dog walker or arranging a visitor to pop in. This provides social interaction and exercise while you’re away.
