What is cat grass?
Cat grass is a general term for a variety of grasses that are safe for cats to consume. Common types include wheatgrass, barley, rye, and oat grass. Unlike outdoor grass, which may be treated with chemicals or pesticides, cat grass is grown specifically for feline consumption, making it a safe and nutritious treat.
The health benefits of cat grass
Cat grass aids Digestion
Cats are natural carnivores, but they often nibble on grass to aid their digestion. Cat grass contains fiber, which helps regulate the digestive system and prevent constipation.
Cat grass helps with hairballs
One of the biggest issues for cat owners is hairballs. When cats groom themselves, they swallow hair, which can accumulate in their stomachs. Cat grass helps move hair through the digestive tract, reducing the frequency of hairballs.
Cat grass provides essential nutrients
Cat grass is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, such as folic acid, which supports oxygen circulation in the bloodstream. The chlorophyll found in grass also helps to freshen your cat’s breath and promote general health.
Cat grass encourages mental stimulation
Having cat grass around gives your cat an interactive and stimulating environment. Chewing and playing with grass can help relieve boredom and reduce stress, which is particularly beneficial for indoor cats.
Cat grass reduces the risk of eating unsafe plants
Many household plants are toxic to cats. By providing cat grass, you can divert their chewing instincts away from potentially dangerous plants and toward a safe alternative. In store we always label which of the houseplants we sell are pet-safe. If you’re not sure, always ask us.
How to grow cat grass
At Nelly’s we sell pots of cat grass that are already established for just £2.49 per pot. The cat grass can live happily in a bright spot, it is best kept out of direct sun. Water it once the soil is getting dry, be careful not to let the soil stay sodden with overwatering as the grass will quickly die.
Let your cat can nibble away on the grass, or you can give it a trim to keep it fresh.
