What is a healthy diet for dogs?
A well-balanced diet is essential for keeping your dog healthy, energetic, and happy. Just like humans, dogs require the right mix of nutrients to thrive.
We know it can be overwhelming with the amount of different dog food brands and types. We hope this information can help you make informed choices about the best food for your dog.
Essential Nutrients for a Dog’s Diet:
Protein
Protein is the building block of your dog’s muscles, skin, and immune system. High-quality sources of protein include chicken, beef, turkey, fish, lamb, and plant-based options like lentils and peas.
Fats
Healthy fats provide energy, support brain function, and maintain a shiny coat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish oil, flaxseed, and chicken fat, are particularly beneficial.
Carbohydrates
While dogs do not require as many carbohydrates as humans, they still benefit from fibre-rich carbs such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and vegetables. These provide energy and aid digestion.
Vitamins and Minerals
Essential vitamins and minerals support a strong immune system, bone health, and overall vitality. Leafy greens, carrots, blueberries, and eggs are great natural sources.
Water
Hydration is just as important as nutrition. Always provide fresh, clean water to keep your dog properly hydrated and support digestion and circulation.
At Nelly’s we offer a wide range of trusted and loved dog food brands. We are particularly proud of our own Nelly’s dog (and cat) food with it’s high meat or fish content. We have grain free ranges made with sweet potato, perfect for those with grain intolerance.
What to Avoid in Your Dog’s Diet
Some food can be toxic for dogs. Avoid chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic. If you think your dog has eaten these foods call or visit a vet for advise.
Excessive fillers are of very little benefit to your dog’d diet. Low-quality dog foods often contain corn, wheat, or soy, which offer little nutritional value. Look for dog foods that are grain free or a low grain content if possible.
