Tips from a pro dog walker

We had the pleasure of chatting to Stacie, the owner of Little Legs, a local dog walking and pet sitting service. She shares the story of how she became a professional dog walker and her top tips for happy, safe dog walks.

Little Legs

What is your background and how did it lead you into starting your business?

“I’ve always been a dog lover, but it was having my own that truly opened my eyes to their needs, not just the basics, but their emotional wellbeing too. My background isn’t in pet care on paper, but living with my own dogs and helping them work through their little challenges drew me deeper into the world of training, behaviour, and enrichment. I realised this wasn’t just a passion, it was something I wanted to build my life around. So I took the leap into dog walking because I love being outdoors, and alongside that, I began studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Canine Welfare, Care and Behaviour.

Eventually, that’s when Little Legs was born: to give dogs safe, joyful, enriching walks, and to give owners peace of mind knowing their best friend is in good hands. As for the future? Well… who knows what’s around the corner for Little Legs!”

What is your favourite part of running your business?

“The pooches! I love seeing their happy faces when I pick them up, and watching them overcome little personal triumphs is such a win. There’s nothing better than a wagging tail, or even a big, toothy doggy smile (yes, it’s a real thing!) when they see you.”

Do you have a particular favourite dog walking spot?

“I’m a big fan of woodland walks. There’s so much enrichment for dogs; different scents, sights, and sounds to explore. Plus, they’re perfect for hot days or even dodging the rain!”

What are your top tips for a happy and safe dog walk?

“So, I recently shared my top 5 tips for off-lead walks in this post, which covers the key things we keep an eye on during our adventures. But if I had to pick my top 3 for any walk on-lead or off, they would be:

1. Know your dog’s limits and tolerances: Go at their pace. New environments can be overwhelming, so tune in to how they’re feeling and adjust as needed.

2. Read the room & advocate for your dog: Not every dog enjoys meeting others. Learn to read your dog’s body language and spot signs of stress. If you see another walker avoiding you or keeping their dog on-lead, it’s often best to give them space; they might be managing their own challenges.

3. Let them sniff!: For dogs, sniffing is exploring. Walks aren’t about the destination; they’re about the quality of the experience for them.”

What is your go-to dog treat or dog toy?

“My dogs love to tug, so any good tug toy or a ball for Dexter is a win! Treat-wise, we love to give them anything fishy - so sprats are big in our household. Though I do have to remember where I've hidden them so there are no nasty surprises a day or two later!'“

We hope you have enjoyed hearing from Little Legs.
